Sl600 Renntech

This 1994 Mercedes-Benz SL600 (WDBFA76E3RF096914) was treated to a full RENNtech 7.0 liter engine conversion during the mid 1990's, a process that included an array of supporting upgrades with a resulting bill of over $71k (~$117k today). Now offered by its second owner who has been with the car since 2004, condition looks decent throughout for listed mileage of 72k, and the enlarged V12 should be putting out about 550 HP and nearly 600 lb. ft. of torque. Production numbers for tuner specials like this are tough to track down, but data points to just a handful being upgraded during the 1990's, a figure far smaller than the 150 SL70 AMG's produced between 1996 and 1997. Find it here on eBay in Louisville, Kentucky with no reserve.

It sounds like this R129 SL started life as any other, but was given the top of the line RENNtech treatment when it was just a few years old in the mid 1990's. As far as the exterior is concerned, things appear to be in good shape with consistent and glossy black paint covering all panels and the AMG bodykit, which was installed by RENNtech. Ride height looks about standard, but wheels are three-piece AMG Monoblocks with polished barrels and tires that measure 235-section in the front and 275 in the rear. A wheel offset change also appears on the scanned receipt, and the exhaust system uses a stainless steel resonator bypass, rear muffler and tailpipes, all by RENNtech. Top-up photos show a few creases but nothing of real concern, while the factory hardtop is pictured as being included on its rolling dolly.

The interior wasn't spared from modifications, and now sports RENNtech instruments and full carbon fiber trim. There's also a set of aluminum foot pedals, and an AMG plaque on the center console that might display RENNtech founder and former head of AMG Hartmut Feyhl's signature. The receipt also mentions an ASR delete which, which is visible just ahead of the carbon fiber shift lever. Floor mats are fitted AMG items that appear to be in decent shape, but the leather seats are showing their age in a few areas.

While BMW and Jaguar were using SOHC, 24-valve V12 engines for their high-line cars, Mercedes had thrown down the gauntlet with their quad-cam, 48-valve M120. Only fitted to upmarket MB cars during the 1990's and very early 2000's, this engine would soon be replaced by a more cost effective and powerful SOHC three-valve twin-turbo unit, but the underlying architecture developed for the M120 would go on to be used in the Pagani Zonda.

The powerplant on display below sounds to have left the factory in standard SL600 6.0 liter form, which made 389 HP and 421 lb. ft. of torque. The RENNtech 7.0 liter uses different camshafts than AMG versions, and cost $32k alone in-period (~$53k today). Performance was increased substantially, thanks to output of between 525 and 550 HP and torque not far off from the 600 lb. ft. threshold. Motivation is sent to the rear via a Mercedes-Benz 4G-Tronic auto.
